We are sad to report the death of Harrell Howell, an NSSA Life Member from Alabama and dear friend of the association, after a long fight with several health problems. Harrell died on November 12 at the age of 73. Funeral services with full military honors were November 13.
Harrell was a longtime supporter of shoots on the East coast and had worked with Forest City Gun Club for many years. He was also a Laporte dealer.
His friend Ken Keth relates a story about an experience he had with Harrell at a recent World Shoot. “I was walking on Vendor Row, meeting friends and shaking hands. I saw Cory Howell, Harrell’s nephew. I said hello and we spoke for a minute,” said Keth. “As I turned to move along, this man who looked like someone from the Duck Commander show extended his hand and said, ‘Hello, how are you?’ I replied politely, not recognizing this person. Later that evening, I was standing in line at Rudy’s BBQ and Cory was in front of me. I inquired about Harrell’s health. He responded, ‘Ask him for yourself. He is right in front of me.’ There was the Duck Commander guy. Harrell laughed and said. ‘I knew you did not recognize me earlier on Vendor Row.’ I believe he was having a great time surprising people with his new appearance. Harrell will be missed.”
Harrell was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Deloris Ragan Howell. Survivors include two sons, Daniel Howell and Corey Howell; a sister, Caroll Howell Rowe; two grandchildren and a nephew.
